ReplyDeletehttp://www.suite101.com/content/overcoming--racial-hate-crime-a-personal-triumph-a284235
My Idea:
This article is about a few white college girls who trick an eight year old black girl into going into a pen with a crazy dog, knowing that the dog will attack her. Then the college girls did not help the 8 year old when she was screaming. The article goes on to advise people not to blame a whole race for one incident.
I want to start out my paper by summarizing my article. Then I will define "hate crime", and talk about if this incident happened strictly because of race. I will also talk about my project in my paper.
My idea for my project is to blue print an add on the side of a computer screen to like "win a lap=top" or something like that, but if you complete the activity, a message will come up about racial hate crimes.

ReplyDelete(Most probably the huffingtonpost article)

http://www.state.gov/g/tip/
Idea:
The paper will be written as a blueprint. It will focus on modern day slavery. There is a site I found called “Verite” that focuses on fair labor on a worldwide scale. I like this article because the writer, Marc Gunther, gives examples of what modern day slavery is and talks about what initiatives are out there to end it. This article talks about how modern day slavery is not the equivalent of 19th century slavery because today “in theory” slaves have “legal rights.” (but not really).
My blueprint will include plans to boycott all materials that are products of “slavery” (forced labor, children). Also there are many sites that have already started movements against modern day slavery that seem trustworthy in helping the cause. I will do research and put together a sketch on how one can do their part to help end modern slavery (and maybe include trafficking, be it sex or slavery because it is closely related to the article).

ReplyDeleteThis article is written by a teenage author who's parents are in a biracial marriage. The writer explains the stereotypes associated with growing up as a biracial child and having parents of two different races.
I would start my paper in explaining the article, along with adding my ideas and commentary into my summary.
From there, I would make my paper a blueprint for the project I plan to do: sending out a chain email or some kind of notice on a social networking site (e.g. facebook). As this article is by teens and about teens, I think the targeted readers here should be teenagers as well and this generation is very technologically savvy. Preferably, I would keep the notice short and powerful (knowing that not all teenagers would take the time to read a lengthy "raising awareness" message).
http://articles.cnn.com/2010-04-10/justice/hate.crime.arrests_1_hate-mexican-bats?_s=PM:CRIME
ReplyDeleteThis article is about a Mexican who goes through a usual day, comes off the subway, and is brutally attacked by four seventeen year old boys. He is sent to the hospital and said that he feared his own death. Police state that this is most likely due to the fact that he is Mexican.
I, like Rachel, will begin with a longer summary/explanation of my article and then move on to talking about blueprints for a walk against hate crimes (more fueled by Mexican hate crimes). I will most likely talk about how the walk would go in my paper as well.
My blueprint will be to start making a website, flyers, brochures, etc informing people about Mexican hate crimes. All these things will talk about a walkathon I am hosting to inform a broader spectrum of people.
http://racerelations.about.com/b/2010/08/29/school-districts-to-crack-down-on-mexican-students-who-cross-border-for-education.htm
ReplyDeleteMy article is about the immigration debate in the United States. The school districts in California are now hiring officials to follow students home, based purely on assumptions and racial profiling in order to make sure they are legal U.S. citizens, and have the proper residency.
For my project, i'd like to write a personal essay, or journal, however, it would be from the perspective of one of the students that is illegally going to school on the California-Mexico boarder.
While i'm not exactly certain what my 'blue-print' is going to consist of, i know that my overall objective is to create a compelling story, that reflects the feelings and emotions of these students who are being subjected to racial profiling and having their education taken away from them.
http://www.bvblackspin.com/2010/04/28/st-marys-college-professor-accused-of-racism-in-class/
ReplyDeleteThis article is about the racist comments made by a college professor towards one of his students. The student was told to sing a song in class which had a racist lyric but while he was singing the professor made a series of racist comments. When one of the students in the class complained about this incident the professor proceeded to make inappropriate comments.
To start out my paper, like matt and rachel i will summarize the article and discuss it a little more in depth.
For my project i will make it a blue print for a commercial on tv that talks about racism and how its not acceptable and something should be done about it. The commercial will have a helpline you can call if you experience racism and are scared to report it or you do and no one listens to you. This helpline will be able to provide help to victims of racism.
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/19/opinion/19douthat.html?ref=affirmative_action
ReplyDeleteThe article I will focus on in my paper is titled "The Roots of White Anxiety." It is about affirmative action and bias in the college application process. Because college admissions is such a pertinent issue for Maret students, I want my project to be based in the Maret community. My paper will be part blueprint, part product. I want to actually send out an email to the entire upper school with a link to this article and with a few survey questions about student's opinions regarding affirmative action. I will analyze the results and include them in my paper. The blueprint part of my paper will focus on describing a mock upper school assembly about the issue of affirmative action, in which some of the college counselors and teachers could speak and students could voice their opinions. It would be like an open forum discussion.
http://www.opednews.com/articles/No-Excuse-for-Racial-Profi-by-Mary-Shaw-100117-629.html
ReplyDeleteThe article I'm focusing on discusses the christmas day bombing. After the event many people were enraged about the security and suggested that racial profiling should be allowed. A USA today poll was taken and found that most people are in support of racial profiling. Mary Shaw the writer of the article argues this stating the many down sides to this idea. For my paper I will summarize the article and show some of Mary's points on why racial profiling is bad as well as my own. Also I will make a rap video about racial profiling and post it on youtube for all to see. hopefully it will get the message across that racial profiling is a bad thing.

ReplyDeletehttp://kadnexus.wordpress.com/2010/03/01/racism-behind-suicide-attempts/
ReplyDeleteMy article describes a troubling trend in our society. It states that adopted adolescence kids from foreign countries are 4 times more likely to commit suicide then a non-adopted child. This is especially prevalent among asian girls. Studies show that racism and sexual abuse because of race may play a large role in this trend. This combined with the issue of finding identity and personality in a modern society they may feel alienated from. "It’s also not unusual for foreign adoptees to have greater problems in finding their identity in relation to their parents and society as a whole."
My idea is to create a short film piece visually describing the issues that adoptees go through and how these issues can lead to suicide. My paper will begin in a research orientated essay detailing the issues and trend among adoptees, and will eventually become a blueprint for the film.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/11/black-muslims-hear-echoes_n_712862.html
ReplyDeleteArticle: Black Muslims Hear Echos of Jim Crow in Current Anti-Muslim Furor
This article talks about the direction that the US is heading in terms of racism and how the current racism towards Muslims in the US harkens back to the times of segregation when blacks where treated as second class citizens. The author also interviews black Muslims in the US who express their concern over their welfare because of the current anti-Muslim, hate sentiment that seems to be spreading.
I am not entirely sure of my blueprint yet but I think that I would first contact the author of the article and work in conjunction with her in order to go about making changes. I think that I would organize a rally or a march and I would pass out flyers and post signs showing the connections between the Jim Crow era and the anti-Muslim sentiment of today. I hope that this would lead people to understand how incredibly dangerous and extreme people in this country are becoming.
http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/bs-md-lockner-plea-20100922,0,2290373.story
ReplyDeleteMy article takes place in Bltimore, MD. AN elderly, black man is beaten by a white surpremacist, because of his skin color. The offender admitted to assaulting the man because he was "black." After beating the old man, he then robbed him, by stealing his wallet and the keys to his truck. He was pleaded guilty to carjacking, hate crime, 1st degree of assault, and assault of a corrections officer. He is sentenced to 31 years in prison. He also has a Hitler tattoo on his stomcach and is a member of the Arayan Brotherhood.
http://www.helium.com/items/1670108-racism-in-schools-racism-racism-and-tolerance
ReplyDeleteMy article is about a mother whose daughters go to a predominately white school. At the school her daughters receive some subtle forms of racism. The mother tries to get the principal involved with the matter to stop the racism that her daughters experience but the principal refuses to meet with her. The principal just pretty much ignored the seriousness of the situation. The woman's other daughter had another experience of racism after the first one. Once again the school ignored it.
I will give a summary of the incident in my paper and give some examples from life at Maret as well. I am not exactly sure what I am going to do for my blue print but I believe that at Maret or in the past at Maret, at least amongst my friends, there have been cases of racism that just get ignored or laughed off so I want to some how relate my blueprint to Maret.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.nysun.com/new-york/hate-crime-charges-filed-against-five-jewish/42836/
ReplyDeleteMy article is about 5 Jewish teenagers who were charged with hate crimes for beating up a Pakistani-American. They beat this man up with brass knuckles, breaking bones in his face and bruising his body all because they classified him as a terrorist.
I plan to blueprint and eventually make a blog that discusses different articles about race and gender specifically hate crimes, and how these crimes affect the community that we live in today. I plan to somehow connect this with facebook so if I follow through with this project, I can update it daily.
http://www.suite101.com/content/black-farmers-seek-senate-bill-passage-to-fund-usda-settlement-a285925
ReplyDeleteMy article is about black farmers who are asking the senate to pass a bill that would help fund 1.25 billion settlement for a class act discrimination lawsuit by black farmers. The bill has failed 7 times in the senate.
I will give a summary of what happens in this article and give other cases where blacks have been discriminated against in the court of law.
